A brief description about St Neots Model Flying Club

As a small club we have fun and aim to fly safely.

The aims of the club are to:

a. Secure and retain flying facilities for the members.
b. Offer advice and instruction to members & prospective members of the club.
c. Promote the construction and safe flying of model aircraft locally.

The club is mainly a sport flying club. We fly radio control models built from a variety of materials from the traditional balsa, spruce and ply mix, to modern foam, fibreglass and carbon fibre mixtures. Members operate many types of models. Examples include: gliders, glow/electric/diesel/petrol powered, sports, scale, fast, slow, fixed wing, helicopters, and unorthodox models.

The models are controlled from the ground using radio control equipment. This consists of a modern multi function transmitter, held by the pilot, and a receiver and servo's mounted in the model. This gives us control over the model aircraft just like a full size aircraft. The transmitter and receiver are both powered by batteries, normally re-chargeable.

Models can be powered by a variety of means: winching them up for gliders, electric power (ever more common) or powered by internal combustion engine.
These generally fall into 3 categories:

1. A Glow engine that uses a mix of Methanol and Castor-Oil.
2. Diesel, runs on a paraffin based mixture
3. Petrol, runs on a 2 stroke petrol/ oil mixture.

These days, models can come from a variety of sources: pre-built (and covered & painted), built from a kit, built from a plan, or designed and built from scratch.

During the winter months October to Easter, we use Longsands Academy in St Neots for Indoor Flying. We hold these events about twice per month and they are open to non members. FOR OCT-DEC 17 WE ARE USING ERNULF ACADEMY FACILITIES DUE TO ROFF REPAIRS AT LONGSANDS ACADEMY.
